BRIEF

The Department of Finance required an enterprise-wide data maturity assessment to guide the development of their IT strategy and roadmap.

CHALLENGE

The federal Department of Finance have a broad remit which requires them to manage vast data reserves.

Each division collects, stores, and manages data relevant to their area but siloed systems and a lack of data governance was limiting the sharing and re-use of data.

The use of local storage and over-classification of data were also limiting accessibility.

SOLUTION

  • Conduct over 140 stakeholder interviews to understand business needs and current pain points

  • Process and experience mapping of core activities to illustrate system touch-points and manual handling practices

  • Conduct a comprehensive data maturity assessment to baseline current practices

  • Develop an IT Strategy and pragmatic roadmap to align divisions towards and common vision and guide investment and prioritisation decisions

OUTCOME

  • The maturity assessment provides a quantitative baseline across people, process and technology lenses and empowers the department to independently assess their improvement

  • The IT Strategy outlines core principles to balance critical data privacy and security requirements with accessibility to increase sharing and re-use of data
